Soon after the climatic election of 2008, we wrote congratulations you won. Now the country is yours. Now run it. We weren't kidding.Only in nuanced ways has the government changed and that's not what a lot of people have wanted. What's needed is a shot of mostly independent moderates to get involved in a big way. We don't agree with a lot of what the Teapartyers say but still have to admire their spunk, as well as their ability to organize and make their opinions heard.
Up to now we've thought that individual moderates have little chance of making their positions heard given the way the two parties pick their candidates, but we came across one group that could have the remedy - "Citizens Campaign-Jersey Call to Service. If their Web site jointhecampaign.com is to be believed, they are not for any one specific ideology but rather want to get more people involved.

Metuchen hoping to spur residents to get involved Home News Tribune March 9, 2010 By Lalita Aloor Amuthan
A "Call To Service Summit" aimed at encouraging residents to take leadership roles in their community will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 20 at borough hall. The summit will be hosted by the Citizens' Campaign and the Metuchen Edison Woodbridge YMCA.
Several neighboring towns, including Edison, have held similar events aimed at increasing citizen participation on municipal boards, committees and commissions. Borough resident Grace Shackney, a volunteer with the Citizens' Campaign, said she got the ball rolling on holding a summit in Metuchen.

Metuchen Adopts "Call to Service" Resolution The Atom Tabloid on NJtoday.net Thursday February 25, 2010
The Metuchen Borough Council recently adopted the Citizens' Campaign model resolution creating a "Call to Service Summit," an annual event to recruit and educate a new generation of civic leaders in the borough.
